FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Impulse Defence?

Impulse Defence is a Dubai-based self-defence and personal safety organisation that empowers children, teenagers and women with the confidence, awareness and practical skills to stay safe. Our classes combine self-defence techniques with real-world personal safety education, helping students recognise danger, set healthy boundaries and respond confidently in challenging situations

Who are your classes suitable for?

We offer classes for children, teenagers and women of all abilities. Whether you’re completely new to self-defence or have previous martial arts experience, our sessions are designed to be welcoming, inclusive and suitable for beginners.

Do I need any previous martial arts experience?

Not at all. The majority of our students are complete beginners. We teach everything from the ground up, focusing on practical techniques that anyone can learn regardless of fitness level or experience.

What age can children start?

Our youngest students 6 years old. We offer age-appropriate classes that focus on confidence, personal safety and practical self-defence in a fun, supportive environment.

Are your classes just for girls?

No. While Impulse Defence specialises in empowering girls and preparing teenage girls for greater independence, we also offer mixed classes for boys and girls aged 7–17, as well as training for women. Please refer to our class timetable for the latest schedule.

Who are the Instructors?

All Impulse Defence male and female instructors are experienced martial artists and qualified Black Belts in a range of disciplines, including Kickboxing, Krav Maga, Taekwondo, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What happens during a typical first class?

Your first class is designed to be welcoming, engaging and fun.

Students will meet their instructor and classmates before taking part in a variety of activities that may include:

  • Warm-up games and movement exercises

  • Practical self-defence techniques

  • Personal safety discussions

  • Confidence-building exercises

  • Real-life scenario training

  • Teamwork activities

There’s no pressure to be perfect. Everyone learns at their own pace, and beginners are always welcome.

What will my child learn?

Every class combines practical self-defence with essential life skills, including:

  • Situational awareness

  • Stranger awareness

  • Boundary setting

  • Using their voice confidently

  • Anti-bullying strategies

  • Escape techniques

  • Confidence and resilience

  • Decision-making under pressure

  • Respect and self-discipline

We believe preventing a dangerous situation is just as important as knowing how to defend yourself if one occurs.

How does self-defence help children build confidence?

Confidence doesn’t come from being told you’re confident, it comes from knowing you’re capable.

At Impulse Defence, children build confidence by learning new skills, overcoming challenges and practicing real-life scenarios in a safe, supportive environment. As they develop their ability to recognise danger, set boundaries and protect themselves, they also become more resilient, independent and self-assured both inside and outside the classroom.

What martial arts do you teach?

There isn’t one martial art that is the “best”, each discipline offers something different. The Impulse Defence Syllabus draws from a variety of martial arts including Kickboxing, Krav Maga, Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Our classes emphasise trusting your intuition and using skills appropriately to escape danger.

What should students wear?

Comfortable sportswear and all jewellery removed.

How long are the classes?

Our weekly classes are 60 minutes long, providing the perfect balance of learning, movement and practical scenario training.

Can parents watch the classes?

We encourage children to develop independence during lessons, so parents are generally asked to wait outside the training area. However, we regularly provide updates and are always happy to discuss your child’s progress after class.

What makes Impulse Defence different from a martial arts club?

Traditional martial arts often focus on sport, competition or grading. At Impulse Defence, our priority is preparing students for real-life situations.

Alongside practical self-defence techniques, we teach:

  • Personal safety

  • Situational awareness

  • Healthy boundaries

  • Assertive communication

  • Online safety

  • Travel safety

  • Anti-bullying strategies

  • Confidence and resilience

Our aim is to give students skills they can use every day, not just in training.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. We provide one-to-one and small group personal training for children, teenagers and women across Dubai.

Private sessions are ideal for:

  • Building confidence

  • Preparing for university

  • Women’s personal safety

  • Extra support alongside weekly classes

  • Learning at your own pace

What workshops do you offer?

We offer a range of workshops for schools, universities, businesses and community groups, including:

  • Go Prepared – Personal safety and life skills for teenagers preparing for university.

  • Speak Up, Stay Safe – Confidence and personal safety workshops for younger children.

  • Corporate Workshops – Practical personal safety, situational awareness and workplace wellbeing training.

Each workshop can be tailored to suit your audience.

Do you work with schools?

Yes. We regularly deliver workshops, assemblies, enrichment programmes and after-school clubs in schools across Dubai.

Our sessions are designed to complement student wellbeing initiatives and equip young people with practical safety skills for everyday life.

Do you offer corporate training?

Absolutely. We work with businesses, organisations and community groups to deliver engaging personal safety and self-defence workshops. Sessions can be tailored for mixed teams or women-focused groups and cover topics such as situational awareness, workplace safety, travel safety and confidence.

Where are your classes held?

We currently teach in several locations across Dubai, including:

  • Dubai Marina

  • Arabian Ranches 2

  • Studio City

  • Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT)

Please visit our Classes page for the latest timetable.

Do you do gradings?

Unlike traditional martial arts, there is no Black Belt in self-defence. Self-defence is a life skill that evolves through regular practice, education and real-world awareness rather than progressing to a final rank.

Instead of formal gradings, Impulse Defence holds Testing Events throughout the year, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have learned and have the opportunity to earn a certificate in:

Level 1 – 5

Why is self-defence important in Dubai if it’s already one of the safest cities in the world?

Dubai is an incredibly safe city, and that’s one of the reasons so many families choose to live here. However, personal safety isn’t just about responding to crime, it’s about building confidence, awareness and good decision-making wherever life takes you.

Many of our teenage students will eventually travel, study abroad or move to new cities. By learning practical self-defence and personal safety skills now, they develop the confidence and awareness to navigate unfamiliar situations, trust their instincts and make safer choices throughout their lives.
